First Look.

Advantages:

Superb detail; includes early Bf 109 F seat; perfect casting; straightforward cleanup.

Disadvantages:

Conclusions:

I look forward to installing BRASSIN's cockpit in one of my S-199 kits. Detail really is superb, and modellers with some experience working with resin shouldn't have any trouble fitting it. It's nice to see Eduard's attention to detail too, with different versions of the cockpits for the Erla and sliding Bubble canopies, as well as the choice of battery box cover or stowage hatch behind the pilot's head.

FirstLook

Eduard's PRINT series offers 3D printed resin parts. Also included are a colour photo-etched fret and a small printed acetate sheet delivering a useful multi-media package.

In the case of the S-199, Eduard has released two subtly different sets - one for the Erla and one for the sliding Bubble canopies.

Eduard's PRINT 1:72 scale S-199 cockpits each comprise ten pieces in grey resin, 13 pre-painted photo-etched parts, one small sheet of acetate film and a fold-out instruction leaflet.

The S-199 kit cockpits are very good, with sidewall detail moulded to the insides of the fuselage and colour photo-etched parts supplied for the instrument panel, trim wheel and harness straps. However, Eduard's PRINT cockpit really kicks it up a notch.

Printing quality is perfect on my sample. You might be able to see some faint striations on the sidewall parts but the photographs are much larger than the resin parts and you really won't see a thing when they are painted and installed.

Cleanup is fairly straightforward with the parts are printed onto many fine resin strips, so a sharp knife and a swipe with a sanding stick will really be all that is required.

It is nice to see the choice of the battery box cover or the flat stowage hatch behind the pilot's head. Check your references for specific aircraft.

The floor, rear bulkhead and seat ar printed as a single resin piece.

This will speed cleanup and assembly, and detail is in no way compromised.

Similarly, the firewall, cannon breech cover and rudder pedals are printed as another single sub-assembly. Even the toe straps for the rudder pedals have been printed in place - amazing in this scale.

Also included are the instrument panel, control column and gunsight.

For the Erla canopy version - Item No. 672288 - you also receive a 3D printed resin Galland Panzer piece.

For the Bubble Canopy version - Item No. 672289 - a unique armour plate to be mounted on the rear bulkhead is supplied.

Colour photo-etched parts are supplied for the red and white rimmed trim wheel, the harness straps and details.

With the parts removed from their strips and blocks, assembly is very straightforward.

Moulded-on sidewall detail needs to be removed from the inside of the fuselage halves before the cockpit can be installed. When I installed my 1/48 scale BRASSIN G-6 cockpita few years ago, I started off by grinding off the raised plastic detail with a cutting wheel fitted to my Dremel motor tool, followed by scraping with a hobby knife and finally sanding with a coarse sanding stick.

Eduard's Overtrees versions are particularly suited as donor kits for BRASSIN and PRINT upgrades, as you won't be using most of the photo-etched parts of the ProfiPACK versions anyway and it will substantially reduce the cost of your project.  The S-199 Overtrees versions are available direct from Eduard for just USD$14.95 each.

And don't forget the related Eduard PRINT items previously reviewed on HyperScale - 3D Printed Avia S-199 main wheels, exhausts plus four after market decals for national insignia and stencils.

Thanks to Eduard for the samples and images.
