I have just finished building and painting the second test shot of Tamiya's 1/48 scale Il-2 Shturmovik.
My very posititive impressions were reinforced throughout this second build. You can see how the first build went by following this link.
I don't have decals yet, so I used a Good Stuff resin seat with cast-on harness straps as a substitute for the kit's decal seat belts.
I employed a combination of Airscale and MDC decals for the instrument panel. The semi-elliptical dive indicator lines in front of the windscreen are decals from the Italeri rebox of Accurate Miniatures' Il-2m3. Once again, Tamiya's decal sheet will include these when you buy your kits.
I also replaced the cannon barrels with brass tube. The model was otherwise built straight from the box.
In the absence of kit markings, I used decals from an Aeromaster sheet, Item No. 48-199. The sticker on the bag tells me that I bought these back in December 1997 from Chris Wauchop's old Sydney shop, "Absolute Hobbies". They worked well despite their vintage.
This model will feature in a two-part series of articles in Issues 15 and 17 of Military Illustrated Modeller magazine. More details will be available closer to publication.
Thanks to Tamiya Japan for the sample
