Introduction

This is Mauve's 1/48 scale P-40N. I built this about 5 years ago for a local competition.

The Mauve kit is beautiful but it has a pretty basic cockpit. Fortunately, both True Details and Eduard make update sets for the kit.

Construction

Cockpit

I used a combination of the True Details floor, sidewalls, rear bulkhead and seat with the Eduard instrument panel, seat belt and levers. All the parts fitted very well.

Fuselage, Wings and Finishing Touches

The Mauve kit went together very well. It has excellent fit and surface detail. The radiator intake splitter plates were thinned out and Eduard details added. The exhausts were drilled as well as the wing gun barrels. Eduard details on the landing gear with copper brake lines added. Eduard also supplies new brackets for the drop tank.

Paint and Markings

Aeromaster Paints (Olive Drab and Medium Gray) were used throughout, including the finish coat of flat.

The decals came from Aeromaster as well and were applied using Solvaset. I find that Solvaset is much stronger than Aerosol/set but you need to be cautious.

A technical pen was used to highlight the panel lines and exhaust stains were airbrushed on using Gunze “tire black”.

Conclusion

The Mauve kit is excellent. Although rare, you can still find it around. However, it really does need the True Details cockpit to do it justice. The Eduard photo-etched set is just the icing on the cake!
