David Doyle Books News #43

Many new publications - and big new sale!

Dear Friends,

Denise and I pray that all of you are well and are enjoying the waning days of March. Soon it seems it will be time to again fire up the lawn mowers.

This week we’ve got some product news, and some personal news, that will interest you. Oh, and a new sale – but you have to read all the way to the bottom of this email to get those details (it surprises me the number of folks that are shopping for books, presumably to read, yet complain about the length of an email message)!

Several of you have written with questions regarding the various tariffs that are in the news, as well as the many potential changes to the postal system that are being discussed.  For the time being, we are holding with our traditional free shipping on domestic orders over $15.  However, unless you specify during checkout, we may opt to ship by some means other than media mail, trying to balance (our) cost with providing you the best service – in some instances UPS or FedEx is of similar or less cost, but faster. Regarding the tariffs – virtually every book we sell is printed outside the USA.  We fully expect to see price increases later in the year, but can only speculate as to how much they will be, but indicators point to about 20% as being most likely.

In our newsstand department an array of new magazines have arrived, including the April Military Modelcraft International and Scale Aircraft Modeling,  Model Military InternationalModel Airplane InternationalTamiya Model Magazine InternationalPhoenix Aviation Modelling InternationalToy Soldier CollectorModel Car Truck Motorcycle WorldFantasy Figures Internationaland Air Modeller 119 (we also restocked on back issues of AFV Modeller).

When it comes to books, there is a lot of news there too:

We’ve added some books from Ammo by Mig – these can be seen on our Battles and Campaigns or Axis Armor webpages.

This week we’ve restocked several books by our friend Tom Laemlien, including his new PAK antitank gunbook, as well as his USAAF WWII Aircraft Weapons and M1 Garand books.

We have also expanded our selection of Tank Craft, Ship Craft and Flight Craft books.

We’ve expanded our selection of books from AFV Modeller to include their Panzerjager Elefant and Made in Holland – the latter showcasing some outstanding modeling of a variety of military subjects.

We restocked the line of Warpaint aviation books.

We restocked on the Sepecat Jaguar and WWII RAF books from Phoenix.

We restocked some books by our friend Dana Bell, including his Painting the Fleet, a study of interwar battleship and cruiser aviation, and his Corsair Cockpits books.

We expanded our selection of German Tank books and restocked on the Der Tiger series.

All the reserved copies of Scale Modelling WW2 German Camouflage Uniforms have been shipped, and we have a few copies of this hardbound book left – they are available here.

Most of the publishers we deal with are small businesses. For many, like ourselves, the guy (or their wife) that wrote and published the book is also the person who puts the book in a box and ships it.  The pride and care that are placed into each step is obvious.  Unfortunately, in an increasing number of cases the boxes containing these author’s “children” are treated with indifference by some in the global transportation system – thus we find ourselves receiving more and more products which are damaged – usually with dings on the corners or marring of covers.  Such books are offered at discounted prices on our “Dented but still good” page.

Finally, my pain is your gain.  While moving mom’s thing from her old facility to her new one, I tripped on a furniture dolly and fell off the ramp of the moving van. After wincing around for a week, and at Denise’s insistence, I went to the doctor. It seems that pain, swelling (think Stay Puff Marshmallow Man) and bizarre colors of my foot and leg are the result of a broken ankle! Like most small business people, I have less than the ideal insurance, so now we have our “pain” sale - 20% off all orders over $200.00!  To take advantage of this opportunity no discount code is needed, just shop as usual and the discount will be applied automatically at checkout.  The offer is good for in stock items only, and expires at midnight Tuesday (April 1).  With me somewhat sidelined, “our” shipping will largely be done by Denise, so please be patient if the turnaround is a little slower than usual. Speaking of which, the Armor Book of the Month club books ARE shipping, but are getting out a little slower than usual given the circumstances.

I suppose on the plus side – less time spent shipping by me is more time for writing (like this newsletter), which will certainly make some publishers happy!

We are grateful for your support.

Sincerely,

David and Denise Doyle
