David Doyle Books News #27
Pearl Harbor Day
Dear Friends,
Eighty-three years ago today, most Americans were listening to their radios or reading the papers, wary of the war that had enveloped Europe as well as parts of the Orient. Portions of America's industry were hard at work manufacturing supplies for friendly nations - notably Great Britain. Nine months earlier the Lend-Lease Act had been passed, paving the way for the "Arsenal of Democracy."
Franklin Roosevelt famously explained this program to the American people, many of which were concerned about the expense, this way:
"Suppose my neighbor's home catches fire, and I have a length of garden hose four or five hundred feet away. If he can take my garden hose and connect it up with his hydrant, I may help him to put out his fire...I don't say to him before that operation, "Neighbor, my garden hose cost me $15; you have to pay me $15 for it."... I don't want $15--I want my garden hose back after the fire is over."
Eighty-three years ago tomorrow, this dynamic changed when aircraft of the Empire of Japan struck the American forces in the Territory of Hawaii. While US strategic planners had long been aware of certain vulnerabilities - and for several years thousands of sailors and airmen had conducted large exercises to prepare for this possibility, nevertheless for the service men and women in Hawaii on 7 December 1941, this came as a horrific surprise.
For the American people at home, it was a shock, and sparked considerable national anger. The smoldering remains of the sunken battleship Arizona, containing over 1000 of her crew, was burned into the minds of a generation - and became a rallying point for those desiring to preserve liberty.
To commemorate this, from now until midnight 10 December 2024, we will include FREE a copy of our softcover book USS Arizona Squadron at Sea with any order of two or more of the publications (in stock publications only). To claim your FREE copy, add the book to your cart, then enter the discount code PEARL during checkout, then when checkout is completed the Arizona book will be reduced to free.
This week we've seen the arrival of several large restock orders, and some new publications as well - we've also done some reorganization of our webpage to make it a bit more user friendly. Here are the week's highlights:
We've moved several titles from our Other Ground Warfare page to our new Battles and Campaigns page.
We restocked and expanded our selection of AK books. These can be found scattered throughout our website on the WWI Ground Warfare, Axis tanks, Axis half-tracks, Uniforms and Scale Modeling pages.
We restocked on several Tankograd books, including their new Panther and KV tank books.
We restocked many of our Israeli Defense Force books, as well as our Small Arms books.
As previously mentioned, we were able to source a few more copies of our long out of print US Half-Tracks Volume 2. We also restocked Tim Scherrer's US Military Handcart book.
As a reminder, we are taking reservations for several new books - and the reservation period for all the books listed below will be closing this Wednesday, 11 December, so do not hesitate!
