Air-Graphics has released an interesting and very useful new decal sheet covering the SEPECAT Jaguar GR.1, GR.3 and T2, concentrating on what the title describes as Standard Squadron Markings. The release is available in both 1:72 and 1:48 scale.

Rather than concentrating on a handful of individually researched aircraft with spectacular special markings, this sheet takes a broader and particularly practical approach. It provides markings representing the standard operational appearance of Jaguars from all RAF Jaguar squadrons. For the modeller, this opens up considerable possibilities.

Suitable serial numbers are also included.

A generous selection of unit markings appears on the decal sheet. Jaguars are depicted in the familiar camouflage schemes associated with the type's lengthy RAF career. Both the earlier Jaguar GR.1/GR.1A-era appearance and later aircraft are catered for, while the inclusion of the GR.3 and two-seat T2 further broadens the potential usefulness of the sheet.

One of the attractions of a release such as this is that it allows the modeller to move beyond the subjects usually provided in mainstream kits. Jaguar kits have often included one or two operational schemes and, increasingly, colourful retirement or anniversary aircraft. However, the comparatively anonymous operational Jaguar, carrying its normal squadron markings and camouflage, remains an attractive subject in its own right. Air-Graphics' sheet appears designed specifically to address this shortcoming.

The instruction book is worth the price of admission alone. Its 28 pages are packed with the various marking options, allowing the modeller to quickly identify the units represented and gain an impression of the overall appearance of each aircraft. The selection includes a mixture of squadron badges, fin markings, codes and other distinctive unit identifiers.

On the back of the booklet, Air-Graphics has printed a paint colour chart calling out Humbrol, Xtracolor, Hataka, Model Master, Gunze-Sangyo, Tamiya, Lifecolor, SMS and MRP.

The range of markings illustrated will be particularly attractive to Jaguar fans. The aircraft served with a considerable number of RAF units during its long career, and squadron markings can add considerable individuality without resorting to the one-off schemes that are often favoured by decal manufacturers.

There are also 2-inch, 4-inch and 8-inch triangle letters; 14-inch and 16-inch tail numbers and letters; 6-inch and 8-inch nose gear numbers and letters; 8-inch black and white serials; 8-inch tail fin and nose gear letters; 6-inch serials; high-visibility and low-visibility roundels and tail flashes; and individual unit markings.

Quite the package!

Of course, the usefulness of the sheet will ultimately depend upon the modeller's choice of kit. Fortunately, the Jaguar has been well served in both 1:72 scale—where the old Hasegawa kit remains respectable—and 1:48 scale, where the superb Airfix kit is the logical choice. A dedicated sheet of standard squadron markings will provide plenty of opportunities for alternative subjects.

The two large decal sheets, each measuring 22cm x 30cm, are printed by Decals Specialist China. The markings are in perfect register with minimal carrier film, while the colours look excellent.

In summary, this is a thoughtful and useful release from Air-Graphics. By concentrating on standard squadron markings rather than special schemes, the company has produced a sheet with considerable potential for the Jaguar modeller. The option of both 1:72 and 1:48 scales is also welcome.

For anyone with a Jaguar in the stash—or perhaps looking for an excuse to build another—SEPECAT Jaguar GR.1/GR.3 & T2 Standard Squadron Markings offers an excellent way to produce something a little different while retaining the unmistakable presence of this legendary type.
