SQUADRONS! No. 75 – The Supermarine Spitfire Mk V: The Australians in Europe and the Middle East, by Phil Listemann, continues the familiar and dependable formula of the SQUADRONS! series, delivering a focused, well-researched snapshot of Australian-flown Spitfire Mk Vs in overseas theatres.

As the title suggests, this volume concentrates on RAAF personnel operating the Spitfire Mk V while serving with RAF units in Europe and the Middle East. The narrative is clearly written and sensibly structured, providing sufficient operational context without overwhelming the reader. Individual pilots and squadrons are introduced with just enough background to place their service in perspective, and the text strikes a good balance between historical record and readability.

Illustrated throughout with period photographs, the book offers plenty of visual interest for the modeller. Images are generally well reproduced and accompanied by informative captions that add useful detail on aircraft configuration, markings, and personal associations. As with previous titles in the series, the emphasis is on clarity and relevance rather than sheer volume, making it easy to extract modelling inspiration or reference material.
The presentation is straightforward and functional, consistent with earlier SQUADRONS! releases. While it is not intended to be a definitive technical study of the Spitfire Mk V, it was never meant to be. Instead, it succeeds as a concise, accessible account of an often-overlooked aspect of Australian aviation history.
In conclusion, this is another solid and worthwhile addition to Phil Listemann’s growing body of work. For readers with an interest in the Spitfire, the RAAF, or Commonwealth airmen serving overseas—and for modellers looking for authentic subjects with a strong personal connection—this book will be a welcome and useful reference.
