The locally manufactured main wheels and tyres fitted to the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) Mustangs are one of the small but distinctive details that set Australian-built aircraft apart from their North American cousins. While at first glance they appear similar to standard P-51 components, closer inspection reveals subtle but distinctive differences—particularly in the tyres themselves.
Tyres
CAC sourced tyres locally, and at least three distinct tread patterns have been identified across CA-18 Mustang variants (Mk.21, 22 and 23).
The most commonly observed is a circumferential block tread, characterised by evenly spaced rectangular segments running around the tyre. This pattern offered a good compromise between durability and grip on a variety of airfield surfaces, especially the often harsh and dusty conditions encountered in Australia.
A second variation features a diamond or cross-hatched tread pattern. This style provided improved traction, particularly on unsealed or semi-prepared strips, and is seen in a number of period photographs—although less frequently than the block tread.
The third, and arguably least common, is a circular radial tread. Some aircraft were also fitted with tyres exhibiting minimal visible tread pattern, but these may have simply been heavily worn.
For the modeller, these tyre variations offer an excellent opportunity to add a subtle layer of authenticity. Careful study of reference photos is recommended, as all three tread types appear to have been used interchangeably across the CA-18 production run. Selecting the correct pattern for a specific aircraft can provide that extra touch of individuality that brings a CAC Mustang to life.
Hubs and Brake Pads
The wheel hubs were broadly similar to standard Mustang items, but variations in finish and minor detail differences might also be observed, likely reflecting local manufacturing practices and maintenance cycles.
What set Australian-built CA-18 series wheel hubs apart was a 10-inch diameter brake pack, replacing the smaller 7.6" Goodyear unit used on standard US-built Mustangs.
Pros and Cons were:
Advantages
Shorter stopping distances
Reduced brake fade
More suitable for RAAF operating conditions, especially in the Pacific and post-war occupation duties
Trade-offs
Slight increase in unsprung weight
Potential compatibility differences with standard US hubs and wheels (important for restorers and modellers)
Red Roo Models adds to their already impressive repertoire of RAAF kits, decals and accessories.
Their latest releases are three sets of 1/72 scale CAC Mustang wheels.
They are:
Red Roo Models Kit No.RRR72190 - CAC Mustang Wheels CAC CA-18 Mk.21, 22 and 23 with Circular Tread Tyres

Red Roo Models Kit No.RRR72191 - CAC Mustang Wheels CAC CA-18 Mk.21, 22 and 23 with Block Tread Tyres

Red Roo Models Kit No.RRR72193 - CAC Mustang Wheels CAC CA-18 Mk.21, 22 and 23 with Diamond Tread Tyres

These should not be mistaken for Red Roo's earlier one-piece wheel and tyre set. The new wheels reviewed here are crisper and better detailed than the first generation.
Each set comprises four parts - two hubs with integrated 10" brake pads and two tyres, available in three styles.
The grey resin is 3d printed. Detail is crisp and printing is perfect on my samples.

It looks like the wheels are ready to assembly straight from their plastic bag.
Instructions have alsways been hallmark of Red Roo Models and these are no exception. The instructions discuss the history and mechanicals of the wheels and include two reference photos each.
Red Roo's 1/72 scale wheels will be an accurate and good looking finishing touch for your CAC CA-18 Mk.21, 22 or 23 Mustang.
If you want a totally accurate Australian manufactured Mustang in 1/72 scale, you are one step closer with Red Roo Models' wheel sets.
Thanks to Red Roo Models for the sample.
