Masking wheel wells...

I’ve performed this chore using various widths of masking tape and white putty for many years and a fine result can be obtained with a little practice. That said, masking wheel wells with tape can be rather time consuming and a little frustrating for those new to the technique.

These wheel well masking plug sets are an awesome alternative. They are laser-cut from dense foam and designed to cover wheel wells, air brake bays, intakes, exhausts, cowlings or other notable areas prior to priming or painting. To install them, simply insert them into the wheel well or the intended area thereby protecting it from overspray.

The pictures show the Wheel Well Masking Plug set intended for the 1/48 Kitty Hawk F-101 Voodoo.

The plugs are made of a soft, colored, foam, that’s chemically resistant and therefore, reusable. That’s pretty handy if you intend to build the same kit multiple times.

Each set of foam plugs are made to fit a specific model from a specific manufacturer. However, the foam is easily cut with an X-acto blade or mini-scissors enabling you are to modify the plugs for different applications. Note, some plugs are split into multiple parts for easier insertion, so the joints may need to be covered by tape.

These masking plugs are available from UMM-USA in the major scales of 1/72, 1/48, 1/35 and 1/32. They stock 75 different masking plug sets in just 1/48!  

These masking plugs are easy to use and are tremendous time savers. Moreover, UMM-USA offers quite a variety of wheel well plugs for all the major scales.
