The 100 Megaton “Tsar Bomba” and Operation Speed Light Bravo

Soviet development of a very large yield thermonuclear weapon began in the mid-1950s. Under the direction of Andre Sakharov (later a famous Soviet dissident), “product 202” was launched with one possible goal being a weapon with a yield of as much as 1 gigaton - a practically unimaginable amount of power.  By 1960, the project had morphed into “product 602” with a much more modest, but still incredibly powerful 100 megaton yield. The product was never intended to be an operational weapon, as it was far too large and complex to be delivered by a missile or an aircraft. Instead, it was a political tool and a vanity project for the enormously egotistical Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev to show the decadent west the unlimited power of the Soviet Union.

It was decided to demonstrate the weapon on the instrumented range on the arctic island of Novaya Zemlya. After performing calculations on the amount of radioactive fallout that a 100 megaton detonation would create, wiser heads prevailed, and while Khrushchev continued to tout his mega-weapon as 100 megatons, the actual yield was around half that. 

The United States had no weapon with anything like this kind of yield, and the US intelligence community were extremely anxious to find out everything they could about it.  Intelligence indications pointed to a Novaya Zemlya test sometime in the second half of 1961, but naturally the Soviets didn’t advertise their schedule. 

By late 1961, USAF Project Big Safari had been in existence for nearly a decade. Its goal was a small, quick, agile, and low-paperwork organization capable of designing and building specialized reconnaissance platforms for whatever requirements should come up. Up to this point, Big Safari’s platforms had included mainly propeller driven types such as the C-97 and C-131. The first KC-135-based platforms were still being planned, and Big Safari knew that its future lay in high performance jets with greatly expanded mission capabilities.

In 1961, the USAF’s main strategic reconnaissance platform was the Boeing RB-47H. But the RB-47 was not equipped specifically to monitor nuclear weapons detonations, a mission that required extremely specialized and highly technical equipment. The first KC-135-based reconnaissance platform, designed to monitor ICBM reentry vehicles (that would become the RC-135S Cobra Ball), was still undergoing Air Force Systems Command testing in 1961, and a specialist signals intelligence variant that would become the RC-135D was still in the planning phase.

By early October of 1961, US intelligence determined that a test of the new Soviet wonder weapon was imminent. Big Safari was tasked with an all-out effort to prepare a KC-135 to collect on the detonation, carrying as much instrumentation as could be put together and installed within only about two weeks. By today’s standards that would be a virtually impossible task, but in 1961 the will and the means (and the money) were there, and Big Safari made it happen. Big Safari program names were deliberately vague, and despite using the same name with a letter designation after it, they often had nothing to do with one another. This program thus got the name Speed Light Bravo (sometimes styled as Speedlight Bravo). Speed Light Alfa was an earlier and wholly unrelated program using a C-97 for missions around Cuba in the 1950s.

The tenth KC-135A off the Boeing assembly line, USAF serial 55-3127, had been assigned to the Wright Air Development Center at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio since delivery to the service in 1957. It was engaged in various test programs, with the temporary test designation JKC-135A - J standing for temporary test status.  Big Safari identified ‘127 as a good candidate for the Speed Light Bravo conversion, and in the remarkably short period of just five days, between 22 and 27 October 1961, it was modified with a variety of sensors to capture data on the detonation. As part of its test work at WPAFB, the aircraft had been fitted with a large ‘dog house’ above the forward fuselage housing optical sensors.  This was utilized, along with a newly installed series of small rectangular windows on the right side of the fuselage. One story has it that some equipment was mounted on 2x4” wooden framework, because it was cheap, easily available, and got the job done.

Although probably still classified, if not lost to history, the exact sequence of events surrounding the modification and subsequent movements of the aircraft is not known. It is also not known from what base it flew the collection mission, although SAC reconnaissance operations took place from RAF Upper Heyford during this period, so that is most likely where the Speed Light mission originated. Regardless of the details, when the test finally happened on 31 October, 55-3127 was on hand to witness it.

In the end, the actual yield of the device was “only” 58 megatons. By way of comparison, the largest thermonuclear detonation by the US was the Castle Bravo test in March of 1954. Initially planned to be 5-6 megatons, it actually generated 15 megatons - less than 28% of that of the Soviet device. As it was, 55-3127 was in a position close enough to have had its paint scorched by the blast. Had the Soviets done a full yield test, it is likely that the JKC-135 would have been vaporized, or at least seriously damaged. Stories abound about how the aircraft “lit up like a Christmas tree” and how it had to be scrapped on site when it landed because it was so “hot”.  While it undoubtedly did light up, it is a fact that it went on to have a long career as a testbed at Wright-Patterson, before finally being retired until the 1990s. 

Six months before Speed Light Bravo was converted, on 1 April 1961 Air Research & Development Command became Air Force Systems Command, and Wright Air Development Center became the Aeronautical Systems Division on the same date. Given the sensitivity of photographing potentially “secret” aircraft in those days, few photos of ‘127 from this time period exist.  It is not known for certain if the ARDC and WADC emblems that she carried during her time at Wright-Pat were still displayed by October, or if she had by then received the new AFSC and ASD emblems as depicted.

As with many such historic Cold War reconnaissance programs and missions, most, if not all of the documentation generated by Big Safari has been destroyed and thus lost forever. We will probably never know the names of the brave SAC tanker crew who flew ‘127 on that historic day, and the aircraft itself has long since been turned into beer cans. I hope this small tribute can go a least a little way toward making sure that history remembers their bravery, and the skill and resourcefulness of the engineers and technicians who created this platform in record time.

 

 

A small historical note: the term “Tsar Bomba” is a modern invention, probably dating from the 1990s. It references the “Tsar Bell” and the “Tsar Cannon”, but was not used at the time of the test.
