Building a Better Mouse Trap

Let's step back into the “hot tub time machine” and go way back to the early 1990s. A young modeler was struggling to cut multiple lengths of plastic to a desired length for a scratch building exercise he had embarked upon. Frustrated, he turned to a fellow modeler and enquired “there has to be a better way to do this consistently”, said the modeler. "Get the “Chopper”.

The young modeler duly purchased the item, consisting of a square piece of Masonite with an arm that a razor blade was attached to. It came with 30°, 45°, and 60° . Metal angle guides attached via thump screw clamps. The tool worked well but over time deficiencies in the design became apparent . The blade, for instance, would cut a groove in the Masonite after repeated cuts and the angle guides would inevitably get lost . A new metal Chopper 2 was introduced some years later that, for the most part, addressed the original's shortcomings, but it was a tad clunky.

This new interpretation of the Mitre Cutter from Liang Model addresses all of the shortcomings of the Chopper.

The blade, for instance, is secured by 3 nuts and bolts ensuring no bending of the blade itself . An open groove is present on the base which will firstly improve the integrity of the cut and indeed extends the life expectancy. On the cutting handle the blade is attached to It is mounted at slight angle to ensure a precise and vertical cut. The design incorporates a sliding stop or length bar (which can be configured for both left- and right-hand applications) to ensure precise and clean multiple cuts. The two angle guides have a swing motion of ten to forty-five degrees .

I’ve tried this tool for this review, and I must say, it is far easier to use than anything I have used in the past and indeed is very well made. It's likely a better mousetrap. The tool can be purchased directly on the following web address http://liang-model.com
