Released in 2023 and already available in a number of boxing including ‘overtrees’, Weekend Edition and regular boxing, this series of kits has received widespread praise for its accuracy and level of detail.

Eduard continues to do a ‘Hasegawa’ on us by releasing number of boxings to make the best use of the moulds and all those extra parts on the sprues - they certainly plan ahead!

In the usual large sturdy top-opening box the lid is decorated with a great image of a pair of “Erlas” lurking over a flight of B-17s, including White 44 one of the decal choices.

The ‘G’ series were an outgrowth of the ‘F’ variant and featured the more powerful DB605 engine. The G-10 variants appeared from autumn 1944 and it went through number of developments and resulted in the ‘K’ series later in the war. Some changes included larger wheels that necessitated bulges on the upper wings, and a reshaped cowling.

The ‘Erla’ version was produced at the Erla factories in Leipzig, Regensburg and Vienna. This particular variant features a new Erla- designed canopy, an altered lower cowling and a taller rudder.

Inside the box are two large dark grey sprues and one smaller one in a resealable clear sleeve and a smaller one with transparencies.

Most of the smaller sprue is not used so appears to be from the earlier series kit. A twenty-page all colour A4 instruction booklet covers the construction in ten pages with colours called out in each one. The first page has a potted history of this famous aeroplane from birth to the post war. A sprue map indicates that 74 parts will go into your spares box. Paints are only for Gunze Aqueous and Mr. Color ranges. Being a ProfiPACK kit there are also a mass of decal choices, a set of masks and two PE frets, one in colour.

The moulds are showing no sign of deterioration and details are as crisp as we have come to expect, especially the interior and surface panelling. Flaps, ailerons and slats are separate parts, as is the rudder. A decision will need to be made early on as to which model to build as several of the decal examples features variations in parts.

It’s probably worth going through the instructions and high-lighting any areas which differ from others. Three of the choices have the extra bulges on the upper wings to accommodate the larger wheels fitted at the Leipzig factory and then are provided as separate upper wings.

Markings

Decals are provided for six examples and each is given a full-colour, four-view set of drawings and a useful set of historical notes. The decals are beautifully printed with great depth, register and minimal carrier film on a mid-blue backing sheet. Swastikas are in the familiar broken format.

A smaller separate sheet contains a mass of stencils and airframe markings.

The aircraft are for :

  1. W.Nr. 151556 of 13/JG 301 in Stendel, Germany , February 1945 in RLM 75/74/70 over 76 with red and yellow rear fuselage stripes,

  2. W.Mr 490617 of Uffz. Gerhard Reiher, 8/JG 3 at Alperstedt, Germany, November 1944 Black 2+- in a similar set of colours but less mottling,

  3. 2/JG 27 at Grossenhain, Germany April 1945 , Black 13, in upper colours of Red Brown and RLM 82 which wrap around the fuselage, over 76 with silver panels under wings and mid-green rear fuselage band,

  4. 1/KG(J) 6 at Bad Aibling, Germany May 1945, White 22 with red and black checks on rear fuselage in RLM 75/70 with 74 mottles and tail patches over 76 with silver panels under wings. This aircraft does not have the large wing bulges for the larger wheels,

  5. Lt.Friedrich-Wilhelm Schenk, 2/JG 300, Borkheide, Germany , February 1945, red 5  This aircraft does not have the large wing bulges for the larger wheels, and

  6. W.Nr 491353, Cap Ugo Drago , 1st Squadriglia, 2nd Gruppo, ANR, Aviano, Italy February 1945, Black 7, in same colours as above but also with the Italian flag edged in yellow on fuselage and fin.

All aircraft have a white spiralled black spinner.

This is a colourful set of markings that will add some interesting schemes to your collection. The last page contains the stencil placement diagram and an array of accessories to add to an already great kit should you feel you need to.

Conclusion

A highly recommended kit to the modeller with any interest in this iconic fighter or in the very late war theatres in which it was operated.

Thanks to Eduard for the sample
