The KA-52 Katran ( Alligator) is pretty modern (late 1990s) attack helicopter in Soviet and allied service. Based on the successful single-seat KA-50 Hokum, it now features side-by-side crew of two and is characterised by a remarkable co-axial rotor system that allows great stability and manoeuvrability and allows the aircraft to survive quite a bit of damage to the tail area.

Zvezda and Dream have produced kits of the KA-52 helicopter in 1/72 and Rockit Studio have made available this remarkable update accessory to replace the somewhat under-done kit rotor area.
The bane of all helicopter kits is the rotor head due to the myriad parts that are required to allow this area to function properly. There are always a number of very fine arms and rods that combine to make up the rotor head, difficult to reproduce in plastic at this scale.

This set is 3D printed in dark grey resin and comes in a small strong clear plastic lidded box which will be useful for storing all kinds of small bits and bobs later. It consists of just two parts, each in a mass of fine supporting pillars whose removal will require quite some care as there are a lot of fine rods that are actually a part of the rotor. What emerges is a remarkable rendition of the two interlocking rotor heads, and it will require some careful painting. The diminutive instruction sheet shows which part is attached to which and indicates that a metal rod goes through the centre of the structure but there is no sign of this in the box. The rear of this sheet also shows that some minor chopping needs to be done to the kit rotor blades before they are fitted to the heads.

This is a stunning little accessory that will add amazing realism to the rotor head of this kit and so come every highly recommended if this is your genre.

Now we just need Rockit to produce similar items for rest of the helicopter world , please!! I can imagine that the modelling world would be delighted to see such accessories for the Scout/Wasp, S-55, Wessex, Sea King, Gazelle, Sioux . . the list goes on.

Thanks to The 48ers for the sample
