The OA-4M Skyhawk started out as TA-4F trainers, which was originally a standard A-4F with an extra seat for the instructor.
The OA-4M was further modified for Forward Air Controller duties.
VMA-131, Marine Aircraft Group 49 (the Diamondbacks) retired its last four OA-4Ms on 22 June 1994.
Phase Hangar Accessories is the rebranded Two Mikes Resin Accessories and the brainchild of Mike Reeves. Mike's name will be familiar to long-time HyperScale visitors.
Phase Hangar has a large selection of products including conversions, details and corrections for a number of Skyhawk variants.
Today I am taking a look at their 1/48 scale OA-4M Skyhawk cockpit. Hasegawa did release an OA-4M Skyhawk kit around the turn of the century but it is now out of production and hard to find as hen's teeth. Phase Hangar's cockpit will get you half way and double the detail for a 1/48 scale OA-4M based on the still widely available TA-4J.
The set comprises 18 parts in grey coloured 3d printed resin.

Full colour instructions are available as a download from Phase Hangar's website.
The elements of the cockpit are:
-
canopy frame
-
front bulkhead
-
rear bulkhead
-
rear cockpit
-
front cockpit
-
front instrument panel
-
rear instrument panel
-
extension
-
instrument panel shroud
-
"hot dog"
-
spine hump
The cockpit tubs are impressive pieces of printing with integrated, crisply detailed side consoles.

The bulkheads offers far better detail than the equivalent kit parts.

The new instrument panels will transform the appearance of the cockpit.

The ejector seats are printed with harness straps and seat cushions in place.

Parts cleanup will be familiar to anyone who has used 3D printed accessories. The parts are attached to fine rods that taper even more narrowly at the point of attachment. Recently I have been using a razor saw to cut the main base from 3D printed parts, then using a new hobby blade in my Olfa knife to cut the strips as close as possible to the surfsce of the parts.

Using a sprue cutter is not recommended although I confess I have used one on my resin parts from time to time without disastrous consequences.
Instructions are available from Phase Hangar's website via download. They offer detailed text directions and colour photographs of the conversion in progress. There is some surgery required but this will be within the skillset of most modellers.

Phase Hangar also offers additional resin enhnancements and conversions for the A-4 family. I'll be taking a look at these in a future review.
Phase Hangar Accessories' 1/48 scale OA-4M Skyhawk cockpit is a thorough and highly-detailed product.
