John Rauscher of Boomer’s Books always has some nice new tools from this Chinese company, and this year at AMPS this device caught my eye.
Anyone who has ever had to come up with circular shapes for either scratchbuilding, upgrading a kit, or cutting stencils for wheel masks knows what a pain it is to create identical diameter shapes and disks for use. When I did a highly modified Tamiya Sheridan kit about 17 years ago, it took me over four hours to cut ten identical rims to correct the road wheels of the kit. There were also lots of wasted efforts where the template shifted or the scriber did not track inside the template.
This device consists of a very heavy cast power-coated red aluminum alloy circular frame with a ball bearing race mounted cutting device that can be adjusted to cut circular objects of from 0 to 50mm (2”) in diameter and repeat them precisely every time. This is due to a rotator similar to the steering wheel knobs of the 1950s and a locking scriber mount that lets the user select the precise radius of cut to be performed.
The device uses tungsten carbide cutters with three different widths included in the supplemental set; one scriber comes in the starter set package. The starter set also includes two Allen wrenches for mounting and locking the scribers.
In summary, this is a product with a lot of upsides and due to its quality – while expensive – should last a lifetime.
