FirstLook

A well-timed arrival given that the Airfix kit has been re-released under the ‘Vintage’ label, rivets and all but still a pretty nice replica of this attractive but relatively poorly-produced light aircraft.

Having built two of the original kits and had concerns about the transparency fit, I have heard that the ‘new’ rendition has these items improved. However there are still issues with the tail surfaces which all need some modifications in size and shape. A search of builds on t’internet should reveal the work that this entails.

The single sheet comes in the familiar zip-lock bag with an A5 title sheet with the upper and lower surfaces illustrated guide on the back. The specific schemes are all illustrated in colour on a double-sided A4 sheet showing port and starboard profiles and decal placement. As usual with this company’s products the decals themselves are beautifully printed with perfect register and minimal carrier film with a gloss finish. As such they are far superior to those provided in the kit.

There are seven choices in several schemes, all of them the CC1 variant as modelled by Airfix.

They are:-

  1. XS743 of the Empire Test Pilots School ( ETPS) in 1989 in the white over Light Aircraft Grey with red fin, rudder and fuselage stripe (decal),

  2. XS743 later in its life at ETPS in 2007 in white over Oxford Blue lower fuselage and wings with red tail and upper wings and nacelles - very attractive!!

  3. XS769 of RAF Transport Command in 1966 in white over Light Aircraft Grey with blue fuselage stripe (decal),

  4. XS770 of the Aircraft and Armament Establishment in the 1980s with an overall white fuselage with red tail, nacelles and wingtips, the blue fuselage stripe is a decal,

  5. XS768 of 60Sqn in 1970 in white over Light Aircraft Grey with blue fuselage stripe (decal),

  6. YK-AMA of the Syrian AF 2007 in white over Light Aircraft Grey with blue fuselage and nacelle stripes (decal), and

  7. XS769 of 207Sqn in 1969 in white over Light Aircraft Grey with blue fuselage stripe (decal)

These schemes essentially cover the full range of schemes worn by this aircraft apart from the Queen’s Flight and special schemes carried by a couple of test airframes.

If this is your thing, then this sheet is highly recommended and probably would be a good joint or club purchase.
