Eagle Cals have released 2 new sets of decals to meet demand and offer some variety with Airfix releasing their very large Spitfire Mk.IXc model. This review will look at the 2 latest offerings.
Eagle Cals is renowned for both the quality of their decals and the level of research that goes into their production. With these two sets they have again kept the quality forthcoming. Both sets are nearly identical with the content with the #185 set having a slightly smaller second sheet of decals. In all other aspects what you get in the set is the same contents. Be aware that some of these decals are large, especially the roundels and gives you (and me who hasn’t actually seen one in person yet) some idea of how big the model will be.
Each of the sets supplies a full set of data stencils and a choice of 2 schemes. The instruction sheet of each set, is a double sided A3 sheet with one side totally in black and white with the data stencil positioning layouts with 4 views covering port and starboard side profiles as well as upper and lower views. Positions for each decal are shown clearly with adequate panel lines to guide you. The other side has 2 large colour side profiles and some smaller upper and lower profiles. One section, when the sheet is folded is the coversheet for the set.
The coloured decal sheets are printed by industry leader, Cartograf of Italy, which ensures top printing quality and ease of application. Colour call outs for the painting of your model are in the detailed notes for each of the aircraft on the black and white side.
And now it’s on to the choice of schemes:
#182 Set
-
KH-B, MA585, Spitfire Mk IXc, P/O George "Buzz" Beurling, 403 Sqn, RCAF, September, 1943
-
WD-W, EN354, Spitfire Mk IXc, 1Lt. Leonard V. Helton, 52nd FG, June, 1943
#185 Set
-
YO-R, BS104, Spitfire Mk IXc, F/O T.K. Ibbotson, 401 Sqn, RCAF, August, 1942
-
AE-W, BS152, Spitfire Mk IXc, S/L Lorne M. Cameron, 402 Sqn, RCAF, March, 1943
These are really nice sets of large decals from EagleCals covering 4 different Spitfire Mk.IX aircraft, including one US version. If you are going to build the 1/24 Airfix Spitfire Mk.IXc kit, then these decal sets are well worth looking at with some interesting nose art on 3 of them. I must say, the huge wing roundels may be better off being sprayed on, but if you going to decal something that large, then these Cartograf printed decals will be your answer. These EagleCals set are highly recommended.
