The ‘Kanal’ is the German name for the English Channel and this 60-page A4 volume sets out to record Luftwaffe operations over and around it from Autumn 1940 until Spring 1941, focussing on the lesser-known units and operations.

In his introduction Axel Urbanke stresses that much inaccurate material has been presented as ‘fact’ by other publications and so he has used an enormous amount of original and personal information to try to correct some of this mis-information.

Many images are being published for the first time, and all are printed large enough on quality glossy paper to be really useful to the modeller and the historian. Maps are clear and very useful in explaining operations.  Text and captions are in German and English.

A large section is devoted to the rescue of downed aircrew, to downed aircraft and the use of balloon cutting devices on He111s and Ju88s, training units and observation posts.

I found much really interesting information in this volume and recommend it thoroughly to both military historians and modellers. There is only one very interesting colour profile of a training flight plane as well as a few colour contemporary images. There are also a number of photos with stories behind them.

Conclusion

If you are interested in the lesser-known aspects of the early war conflict or just the minutiae of the Channel Offensive from both historic and modelling points of view then this book will be of great interest to you.

Highly recommended.
