Henschel Hs 123 B-2

Description

Here is my Gaspatch 1/48 scale Henschel Hs 123 B-2.

I bought this kit back in 2017 and finally got around to it in January 2023. The kit looked very good in the box and turned out to be basically one of the best fitting kits I have ever worked with.

There is a fret of tiny photoetch and if you can get them off the fret, they fit well also. The only problem I had was in attaching the windscreen after the general paint job.

This may be my fault and not the kit. There are masks provided for both the inside and outside, so you could put in place before painting.

The marking chosen were for Adolf Galland’s plane during the invasion of Poland which was still in the prewar splinter scheme. Masking was done with Tamiya tape and the paints were all Tamiya, too. I mix them with lacquer thinner and find they work extremely well, even though I had to mix the specific colors. I used the chips in K.A. Merrick’s books on Luftwaffe Colors as a guide, I made no attempt to match the shades exactly. Way too many variables.

The decals will need a setting solution although they go on ok. MEK or MEK substitute works to eliminate silvering you might find after flat coating. (don’t brush it on, but just use little tiny dabs.)

The figure is a generic German pilot from Aero Bonus and was made to look a bit like Galland by adding a mustache and a cigar in his left hand.

Overall, this is a superb kit and I will now be looking for the A model edition.
