The RAF is renowned for producing spectacular display schemes each year, along with equally wondrous paint schemes applied by other European air forces such as France, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Spain. Designed for any of the 1/72 kits, this sheet will allow the modeller to build a replica of the Typhoon FGR.4, ZJ914 of 29 Squadron based at RAF Coningsby. This aircraft was painted overall Satin Night Black with Cherry Red fuselage spine and wing areas with a representation of sections of the Union Flag on wings, tail and canards.
Decals are provided for all of the patterned areas with the modeller required to paint areas with the red, which has the Xtracrylix number quoted as XA1031, and Medium Sea Grey nose radome and wing and fin edges. The specific red colour may create issues for those of us with little access to the Xtracolour range of paints, or who use enamels. I am not sure whether the red of the decals is the required Cherry Red or if it is the royal red of the Union Flag - do check your references!!
The decals themselves are gorgeous with great colour density and perfect register. Very little excess film is evident and the tiny stencils are well done as well. Areas of scrap colour are provided for touch-up if necessary. The colour instructions fill both sides of an A4 sheet with every one of the multitudinous decals’ position clearly marked. The side profiles are 1/72, while the upper and lower elevations are 1/144.
If your modelling ’thing’ is either the RAF modern fighters or display schemes then this is the sheet for you and come highly recommended.
