Airfix 1/24 scale
Hellcat Mk.II
by Mark Kannemeyer
This model was built to represent a FAA Hellcat Mk.II operating off HMS Khedive, East Indies, March-April 1945 during Operation Sunfish.
After consulting various photos of these aircraft operating in the tropics I decided to go for a faded, washed out finish that was often seen on these aircraft operating in that theatre.
It was a relatively trouble free build, but I was a little disappointed in some of the soft, (rocker covers come to mind) and in some areas missing detail. I would not expect this of a kit in this scale. This was no big problem and nothing that the average modeller couldn't add with good reference material.
I used the kit decals as templates to cut out masks and painted on the markings. Really the only way to go in kits in this scale.
Cheers from Cape Town South Africa.
