Red Roo Models has released a new decal set covering Australian pilots flying the Westland Whirlwind in service with 137 and 263 RAF Squadrons.
All three aircraft are finished in the RAF Day Fighter Scheme of Dark Green and Ocean Grey upper surfaces over Medium Sea Grey lower surfaces. The spinner and fuselage band are Sky.
The first subject is HE-L, serial no. P7062, 263 Squadron. The pilot was F/Sgt Leslie Hicks from Latrobe in Tasmania.
Also in service with 263 Squadron is HE-B, serial P6981 piloted by F/O Max Cotton from Swansea Tasmania.
The final subject is SF-P, Serial P7102, 137 Sqn RAF, flown by F/O Eddie Musgrave from Sydney.
The codes and serials for the three subject aircraft plus a single set of RAF roundels and fin flashes are included.
There is also an errata sheet for the serials, which are too big on the main sheet. This is clearly pointed out in the instructions.
Ed Russell from Red Roo Models explained that their Digital Silk decals are produced in the USA using a Roland printer for a fairly small production run. Colours on the decal sheet are good and registration is perfect. The "Digital Silk" decal sheet has carrier film over the entire sheet so you will have to carefully cut around each individual decal. The instructions note that the film is very thin and that the decals should be handled carefully.
As usual with Red Roo Models, the instructions are a highlight. This time we have six A4 pages of historical background and wartime reference photos as well as a markings guide.
Locations of the markings are provided but there are no colour camouflage diagrams. You don't really need them though, as the standard camouflage pattern is supplied in the kit instructions.
This set offers three high quality markings for Australian pilots flying the Westland Whirlwind in 263 and 137 RAF Squadrons. These will be a nice way to individualise your 1/32 scale Special Hobby kit (it's a fun build too!)
