If you are a fan of 1950s blue Navy jets, as I am, this latest offering from Detail & Scale is an excellent addition to your library. This is a revised edition of F9F Cougar Volume 14 published in 1983, and a companion book to the excellent and expansive 2014 Digital edition. It also pairs well with the recent Detail & Scale F2H Banshee that appeared in 2018.

This latest edition of the Cougar follows the established format of other Detail & Scale books and begins with the design and development of the Cougar through its many design changes including the final version, the 2 seat TF-9J, which remained in service until 1974. Of special interest to the reader will be the Cougar’s first hand pilot’s reports by Navy veterans who flew the Cougar.

There are excellent detail photos of the cockpit in color and black & white and detail illustrations by Rock Roszak including an External Stores Capabilities chart. In all there are 41 pages of detail photos and illustrations, enough for the serious modeler to build a well detailed prize winning model.

Finally there are the kit reviews, a must for books in the Detail & Scale series. There are 12 pages of kit reviews by respected modelers with photos of the assembled and painted models beginning with the smallest kit, the diminutive 1/144th scale  Miniwing F9F-8 to the large 1/32nd scale Fisher Model and Pattern resin and multi-media kit of the F9F-8T/TF-9J. Some kit reviews include suggestion for correcting kit errors.

Detail & Scale's F9F Cougar is recommended for its style, historical reference, high quality photography and excellent kit reviews
