Tamiya's 1/48 Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien is available online from Squadron

This is my 1/32 Hasegawa N1K2 George.

This is a lovely, lovely kit of a lesser known, but formidable late War Japanese fighter.

Construction was painless, with cockpit detail more than adequate.  I used brass Type 99 cannon, they look fantastic and then I got down to painting.  I always use Humbrol primer out of the can, it’s cheaper than Tamiya primer and I prefer it’s lilac grey colour to the very pale grey Tamiya offering.  Then it’s some panel line pre-shading with Tamiya XF1 flat black.  The underside is Tamiya XF-14, with the flaps silver.  The upper fuselage is XF13 Japanese Army Green, with some lightened patches in the centre of the panels.  I’ll have to accentuate this in future, as the effect virtually disappeared under a gloss coat.  For the markings, I simply masked off and sprayed, though I’m conscious that the Hanamuras look a little pink.

After a gloss coat, I applied a wash of Pacific dust, which I over did slightly and made some chipping with a paint brush.  It looks ok in some of the pics, but the effect does look a little bit like mercury on the surface of the aircraft to my eye.  I’ve subsequently favoured priming, then spraying the Tamiya Silver straight from the can and then painting.

A sharp cocktail stick then makes chipping far more realistic.
