Fujimi 1/24 scale
1966 Ford GT40 MK.II

by Brad Huskinson

Hobby Boss' 1/72 P-61A Black Widow is available online from Squadron.com

Introduction

Who doesn’t love the Ford GT40, besides Enzo Ferrari? Especially in the colors it wore when driven by Ken Miles and Denny Hulme at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Build

All parts were removed with sprue cutters, and cleaned up with sandpaper and sanding sticks.

I used both Tamiya Thin and CA glues depending on whether or not the parts have been painted.

It’s almost impossible to insert the completed chassis/interior assembly into body. I found an online build video by Paul at International Scale Modeler, where he showed exactly how to finesse it in place.

Worked like a charm once I knew how.

Colors and Markings

All parts were sprayed with various primers. The body was sprayed with Gravity light grey lacquer primer and virtually all of the remaining parts were sprayed with either Mission primer or Mr. Hobby 1500.

I used a Harder & Steenbeck Infinity for this build. The body was painted with Splash Powder Blue lacquer and 3 very light coats of Mission Model Paints semi-gloss clear. All other parts were painted with a combination of Mission, Tamiya and Testors Metalizer paints.

I had a lot of trouble getting the Gulf Orange decals on the front fenders to fit without wrinkling, so John Miller offered and excelled at outlining and airbrushing the orange fender markings for me.

Decals and Final Finish

The kit decals had yellowed badly, so I ordered a set from Indycals, which worked great!  I used the supplied gauge decals for the dashboard. A drop of clear epoxy glue was put over each gauge decal. It dries to make a perfect glass/plastic gauge cover. Micro Set and Micro Sol were used to apply the decals.

It took a long time to decide if I wanted the car to be finished pre-race or post 24 hours of racing. I finally chose to go post-race. Next I had to figure out how to recreate the grime. I got this crazy idea to airbrush Tamiya Black Panel Line as paint. I used my H&S airbrush with a .2 needle and sprayed many very light passes until I achieved the different levels of grime in different locations on the body.

Conclusion

All in all, it turned out better than I’d expected. So that’s a happy result!
