Eduard's 1/72 Avia B.534 IV serie Weekend Edition is available online from Squadron.com
The afterburner exhaust and nozzles on the early F-4 versions, which had the General Electric J-79 engine, were a fairly simple structure compared with later and more modern exhausts. They still have a good deal of detail within them which is much more noticeable if the exhaust is in the open position.
There are a number of 1/72 early F-4 kits available and plenty of out of production kits still around at swap meets. Many of these kits have very simple renditions of these parts due to the limitations of injection moulding but injection moulding cannot give the detail of the 3D resin parts.
KA Models has produced a set for the early version J-79 engines in the closed position. They also do a version, not reviewed here, in the open position for the same price. These parts are 3D resin printed parts which has no need for all of the supporting scaffolding found on earlier 3D printed releases from many companies. The detail is incredible with only minimal signs of the layered 3D printing effect. As someone who has worked with 3D printers for many years, the advancement of complexity and quality from KA Models is exceptional.
The set consists 6 resin parts with these being a pair flame stabilizers (holders), the tailpipes and the exhaust nozzles, with this set being the closed mode. The tail pipes have supurb detail in them just crying out for good painting and weathering. Have fun though trying to airbrush that length of pipe. The flame stabilizers (holders) have been produced with the multiple levels with in the real structure.
The box has no instructions but construction is very simple being only 3 parts for each engine. KA’s web site has some excellent coloured photos of completed units including some cutaway sectioned oned to give painting guidance but no actual colours named.
I’ve put a couple of these here as well.
This set from KA Models supplies excellent detail and choice for a reasonable price.
Thanks to KA Models for the sample.
