The afterburner exhaust and nozzles on the F-16 whilst nowhere near as complex as the F-15, still have a great deal of detail within them which is much more noticeable if the exhaust is in the open position, as seen below.
The Tamiya kit provides a pretty good rendition of them but injection moulding cannot give the detail of the 3D resin parts.
KA Models has produced a set which includes a choice of exhaust nozzles in either open or closed mode, a highly detailed burner plate and exhaust pipe with intricate detail. These parts are 3D resin printed parts which has no need for all of the supporting scaffolding found on earlier 3D printed releases from many companies.
The detail is incredible with only minimal signs of the layered 3D printing effect. As someone who has worked with 3D printers for many years, the advancement of complexity and quality from KA Models is exceptional.
The set consists 6 resin parts with these being the flame stabilizers (holders), the tailpipe and the exhaust nozzles, with one set of open or closed mode supplied. The tail pipes have supurb detail in them just crying out for good painting and weathering. Have fun though trying to airbrush that length of pipe. The flame stabilizers (holders) have been produced with the multiple levels with in the real structure. Again a real delight!
KA has added a mask set that will cover the extrenal petals of the nozzle that will allow you to spray the under serction without damaging the paint on the petals. A most thoughtful addition.
The box has no instructions but construction is very simple being only 3 parts. KA’s web site has some excellent coloured photos of completed units including some cutaway sectioned oned to give painting guidance but no actual colours named.I’ve put a couple of these here as well.
This set from KA Models supplies excellent detail and choice for a reasonable price. It does give you the option of adding the set to 2 different aircraft, one each in open or closed mode which makes it even better value. These are recommended to builders of the F-16’s of many nations.
Thanks to KA Models for the sample.
