Advantages: |
Drop fit;
replaces the poorly engineered three piece cowling;
adds a significant amount of detail. |
Disadvantages: |
None noted. |
Conclusion: |
Having tried my best to reasonably assembly the three piece Roden cowling, the AIMS replacement is an essential addition. The surface detail and drop in fit make for a vast improvement while requiring less skill from the modeller. |

AIMS is now producing a one piece replacement cowling for the 1/48th scale Roden/Eduard kit.
The cowling included in the kit itself is molded in three separate pieces, which makes for a very tricky build. The three parts attach end to end with no positive means of alignment. Each of the seams are directly in the middle of the minimal surface detail – making it almost impossible to save.
The AIMS cowling features a surprisingly abundant amount of surface detail on both the inside and outside of the cowling – the flanges on the inside of the exhaust collector ring really add to end result as the entire assembly is quite visible. There is very little flash on the part, easily taken care of with a quick sanding.
The kit engine fits perfectly into the AIMS cowling and aligns perfectly thanks to a locating ring molded on the interior.
Having tried my best to reasonably assembly the three piece Roden cowling, the AIMS replacement is an essential addition. The surface detail and drop in fit make for a vast improvement while requiring less skill from the modeller.
Thanks to AIMS for the sample
