Review Type:

First Look.

Advantages:

Superb quality.

Disadvantages:

None noted.

Conclusions:

The paint mask may be a bit of luxury for many in the case of the Su-33, but the two PE sets reviewed here clearly stand to enhance Zvezda’s Flanker-D kit.

I am happy to recommend both detail sets and the pre-cut mask.

Eduard’s 1/72 Su-33 Flanker-D detail sets and mask are available online from Squadron.com

FirstLook

The four sets reviewed here are intended for Zvezda’s Sukhoi Su-33 Flanker-D kit.

For many Eduard is a brand name synonymous with superb quality, and this is certainly the case with the review items, from their packaging and instructions, to the actual components.

Each set comes packed with a large card stiffener sealed in cellophane, along with printed instructions. The instructions for each item are also downloadable as PDF’s from Eduard’s website. To view these please click on the linked part-numbers provided below:

CX475 – Pre-cut canopy and wheel mask. The kit canopy and wheels are quite easy to mask using other methods like cut strips of Tamiya tape, or Bare Metal self-adhesive foil, Parafilm etc. Eduard’s mask is perhaps a luxury for most, but cold be well worth having for those who find masking particularly challenging.

SS580 – Cockpit details. This coloured and plain PE fret addresses the more obvious cockpit details like the ejection seat, instrument panel and side consoles, HUD, canopy details etc; as well as small external items like blade antennae, angle-of-attack and yaw sensors and so on. A clear photo-foil with the outlines of the HUD glass to cut out is also provided.

  • 73580 – Includes the cockpit details etc contained in SS580 above, plus external details supplied on a plain PE fret. These include, auxiliary intake shutters and associated FOD screens, internal air-brake skin, undercarriage details, static discharge wicks, missile exhausts and other small details.

The downloadable instructions should provide readers with almost all they need to about the contents and their intended placement. I have also included Eduard’s website images of the sets installed on the kit, although these show the pre-coloured parts in their “raw” un-coloured state (please see the gallery section above). A scanned image of the PE frets is provided below:
