I bought Airfix’s big 1/24 Mossie back in 2010 and then – not content with an out-of-the-box build – chased pretty much every aftermarket detailing set I could find. Replacement wheels were a particularly high priority, given that the kit items were first, made of rubber, and secondly, moulded with a heavily exaggerated tread pattern. The only aftermarket wheels available at the time (produced by a now defunct company) appeared to be direct resin copies of the kit wheels, which fixed my first problem but not my second.
BarracudaCast’s replacement wheels address both issues. Perfectly cast, they have restrained and realistic tyre tread and more finely detailed hubs than the kit equivalents. The tyres are also more subtly weighted than the kit or earlier resin versions.
According to the Barracuda Studios website, the wheels “represent the late, dual brake style wheel fitted to all but the early Mk IVs and NF IIs.” A look through my various reference books confirms this, although it can be surprisingly difficult to see wheel details on parked Mosquitos!
Unsurprisingly given the size of the model, the wheels are substantial resin castings. However clever mould engineering has achieved relatively small pour gates that should be easy to saw through and clean up. Casting quality on the review samples is flawless
These replacement wheels from BarracudaCast will significantly improve the look of your 1/24 Airfix Mosquito model. Highly recommended and will definitely be used when I get around to finishing my kit!
Highly Recommended.
