Valiant Wings’ Airframe Detail series is unashamedly pitched at modellers with an emphasis on airframe details, a focus on variant differences, coverage of colour scheme, and a modellers’ information section. Nonetheless, they should also appeal to aircraft enthusiasts as well, provided that they are not seeking any sort detailed operational accounts or service history.
The graphic design of the book is most pleasing, and it is laid out in the following sections:
-
Glossary.
-
Brief History – Provides a precis of the Swift’s development and operational use, details the various marks, has period photos, and lists technical specifications.
-
Technical Description – Divided into different airframe sections, this is “the meat” of the book, dealing with every aspect of the Swift’s anatomy. It is replete with photos, many in colour, and technical detail drawings from aircraft manuals; with many useful and interesting notes accompanying these.
-
Camouflage & Markings – Thorough discussion and notes dealing with finishes and markings; plus numerous colour profiles by Richard J. Caruana.
-
Building a FR Mk.5 – A build article covering Airfix’s 1/72 scale Supermarine Swift.
-
Appendices – There are three appendices covering:
-
Available kits, accessories, and decals in multiple scales,
-
A list of squadrons and other units that operated the Swift, and
-
A comprehensive bibliography.
The overall quality of production is very good, logically laid out, and easy to read.
