First Look

Advantages:

Covers unit history and statistics in detail.

Disadvantages:

None noted

Conclusion:

This series is quite specialized in nature, and will not appeal to all. However, for those with a specific interest in No 131 Sqn the booklet is a must have (and the same applies or any other units in the series).

I can also see the some appeal where a modeller’s interest is sparked by a particular aircraft’s markings and who would like to know more of its history. If so, it would be worth checking to see if it is featured in one of the ‘RAF, Dominion & Allied Squadrons At War’ series.

This is a good quality publication that should appeal to its target market, for which I recommend it.

RAF, Dominion & Allied Squadrons At War is a series dealing with an individual squadron’s history and operational statistics in considerable detail. This is complimented by good quality photos of aircraft and aircrew, and well-rendered colour profiles of selected squadron aircraft. The series will appeal to both aviation historians and modellers who like to know the history behind an individual aircraft they model.
The issue reviewed here covers No.131 (County of Kent) Squadron over the period 1941 to 1945.

There are a number of other squadrons covered by the series, and presumably these titles follow a similar format to the review title.

The booklet provides a range of information on No.131 (County of Kent) Squadron. It comprises a short unit history complete with illustrations and artwork, and is accompanied by the following appendices:

  • Appendix I: Squadron Commanders and Flight Commanders.

  • Appendix II: Major awards.

  • Appendix III: Operational diary (number of sorties per month).

  • Appendix IV: Victory list.

  • Appendix V: Details of aircraft losses on operations.

  • Appendix VI: Details of Aircraft losses in accidents.

  • Appendix VII: Aircraft Serial Numbers matching with individual letters.*

  • Appendix VIII: Nominal roll.**

  • Appendix IX: Roll of Honour.

*   Including mission totals for multi-engine aircraft covered by other books in the series.

** Captains only for bomber and seaplane units covered by other books in the series.

It is worth noting that individual files will be updated when any fresh information comes to light. Additional information will be available for download, at no charge, on each squadron’s site at www.raf-in-combat.com.

The book is available in four formats, printed paperback or downloadable in three digital formats from the publisher and others. The printed example’s quality of production is good, although on matt paper. I cannot comment on the appearance of the digital formats.
