Supermodel 1/72 scale
Blohm und Voss Bv 138 C
by Roland Sachsenhofer
Hobby Boss' 1/48 scale Bv 141 is available online from Squadron.com
Oddly enough, the only chance to build one of the Luftwaffes most distinctive seaplanes, the Bv 138 “the flying sabot”, in scale exists in form of the quite old “Supermodel” parts from the middle of the 1970s.
With over 280 examples build, this important plane is the most numerous flying boat build for the Luftwaffe until war´s end, serving in all theatres of war and gaining good reputations as a long range reconnaissance bird and hard hitting strike aircraft.
Well-armed it could defend itself well against attacking fighters –and it reportedly managed to shoot down a PBY Catalina and a Blenheim Mk.V in air to air combat anyway.
My model depicts a well-documented Bv-138C from 3. /SAGr. 125, flown from Constanza /Black Sea in the early months of 1943.
A lot if scratch-work was done in the interior, on the outer engine cowlings, exhausts and the bomb racks…
...and a lot of effort had to be invested in flattening the overdone structures of the surfaces and in rescribing selected panel lines.
If you are interested in the building process and in the models parts, please have a look on the workbench at the JAM Forum:
