Provided separately in both 1/48 and 1/72 scale, this release from the Hellenic decal manufacturer LM Decals covers the life and times of the UH-1H/AB-205 in service with the aviation arm of the Hellenic Army.
Serving from 1969 until the present with the HAA, the UH-1 has seen several different versions of camouflage during its service life. This decal sheet provides option for each of the different schemes. Dimitri Sambanis is a HAA historian and has provided a large amount of information to aid in the production of this sheet. Supplied with not just multi view drawings, photos from Dimitri’s personal collection are littered throughout the instruction sheet for each of the five schemes portrayed. Twenty different aircraft are provided in the different schemes it has operated in.
The schemes provided are
-
UH-1D/H delivery - overall Olive Drab FS34087
-
AB 205 delivered from Italy - Dark Brown FS30108, Sand FS33695 and Light Grey FS36622
-
UH-1/AB 205 - South East Asian camo Tan FS30219, Green FS34102, Light Grey FS36622 (circa early 70’s)
-
UH-1/AB 205 - current scheme all over Help Drab FS34031
Each scheme has it’s idiosyncrasies and the instructions (supplied in downloadable pdf only) clearly annotate the profiles and photos with the appropriate information. Some excellent photographic references from Dimitri's collection show interesting examples of just how dirty these helicopters can get. The current versions in Helo Drab would be an excellent study subject Huey airframe weathering due to the numerous fluid leaks around the airframe. There’s a lot of opportunity to grotty up the model no matter what era you chose.
The Hellenic Huey served in many roles and conflicts including medical evacuation and several of those options are available on this sheet including its use during KFOR. The sheet provides several different styles of fin flash and roundels. The aircraft serial numbers are provided in different font sizes depending on the time period chosen and by mixing and matching the numbers any airframe number should be achievable. Several different versions of the Hellenic Army Aviation badge is supplied - from the earliest winged roundel to the latest low visibility eagle and grenade. LM decals supplies instructions online for all of its decals as a cost saving measure for its customers.
This is an excellent release from LM Decals and thanks to the amount of reference material provided an accurate depiction of a Greek Huey should be possible with this decal sheet. The quality of the decals is excellent all courtesy of the Fantasy Printshop. If you’re a fan of the modern Greek military these would be an excellent addition to the collection.
Recommended.
Thanks to Iliad Decals for these samples.
