Early P-40’s are appealing subjects, with many varied and eye-catching finishes. There have been a number kits of it released in the “One True Scale” over the years, with releases from Frog (re-boxed by at least eight other brands), Academy, AML, Pavla, Hobby Boss, Trumpeter, and Airfix. Iliad Design’s latest release covers a variety of schemes, some of which are a refreshing departure from the decal options included with the kits mentioned here.
The decals are supplied in Iliad Design’s usual zip-lock plastic bag. The instructions are nicely produced in colour and clearly indicate markings placement. A brief note regarding each subject advises colours and marking information.
The subjects, all early P-40s, are as follows:
-
Early P-40 assigned to the USAAC Technical School’s 10th Air Base Squadron.
-
Early P-40 as exhibited at the New York World’s Fair.
-
Tomahawk IIB, AK490 of 73 Squadron RAF, Amriya, Egypt, September 1941.
-
Early p-40 of 33rd Squadron, 8th Pursuit Group, USAAC, September 1940.
-
Tomahawk IIA, AH882 of 403 Squadron RCAF, Bennington, May 1941.
-
Tomahawk IIB, AK431 of an unknown unit (possibly 5 Squadron SAAF), Western Desert, late 1942.
The decals look to be superbly printed with excellent colour density.
