Windsock World War Centenary is a bi-monthly magazine for WWI aeroplane enthusiasts and modellers; it features reference articles with period and modern colour images, archive data and scale drawings, plus kit build articles and reviews of WWI kits, books and products.
The example I had for a first read is certainly a quality publication with all manner of information pertaining WW1 aircraft and modelling them. I see little point in giving a blow by blow description of each article as obviously each edition will vary, but an overview of the contents will provide some idea of the format and variety to be found in this magazine:
-
Frontline News – Remembrance
-
From The World’s WWI Workshops – Austria’s CraftLab
-
Logbook Entries – selected books and journals.
-
Harry Woodman’s original polycard Tommy in 1/48 scale
-
Bleriot goes to war! – a centenary plans feature.
-
On the Transfer List – more decals
-
Rara Avis – the 1914 Farman F.24
-
Our Readers’ Gallery – more great models
-
IPMS US Nationals 2014 – show report
-
In Your Kitbag – 1/48 reissues reviewed
-
Accessories/War Wagons – engines, guns and more!
-
Figuratively Speaking – new miniatures
-
Albatros News – 2015 DF programme reveal
-
Lines Of Supply – your WWI marketplace
The feature articles warrant a brief mention. The look behind the scenes at CraftLab, an Austrian aeroplane reproduction company, includes interesting images of a couple of WW1 types under construction. There is a nostalgic scratch-building feature on the Thomas Morse by the late Harry Woodman, which still makes for a good read today. The Bleriot goes to war article includes an interesting historical account with well drawn scale plans and excellent photos. The Rara Avis article on the 1914 Henry Farman F24 also has nicely drawn plans.
The product reviews section is also informative with fairly in-depth coverage of the products listed.
The review copy was the last issue of Volume 30, and Albatros Productions lists back-copies going as far back as Volume 13.
Windsock World War Centenary is aimed squarely at WW1 aircraft modellers and enthusiasts. I feel it caters very well for this target market, and I happily recommend it to folk such as these.
