During 1942, the clear nose of the Handley Page Halifax was replaced with a more streamlined design on some aircraft. This was officially called Mod 398, but was commonly known as the Tollerton (after the factory) or Z nose.
This nose was a different shape, and it eliminated the large curved Plexiglas surface of the original design. It owes its Z Nose name to the arrangment of supporting framework.
Freightdog Models has released a Z Nose fairing conversion for Revell's 1/72 scale Halifax kit. This comprises just two clear resin parts - the large single nose fairing and a new square resin window.
The nose section is a single piece of clear resin. The solid section of the nose is slightly frosted, while the clear parts are more transparent. As usual with clear resin, you'll get a shinier and clearer finish after a dip into Future floor polish (or your local equivalent).
The casting plugs are modest, and these (along with a line of thin resin flash) will be cleaned up quickly with a sharp hobby knife.
The conversion work itself could hardly be easier. Just glue the clear fairing onto the front of the model. No cutting is required but a few panel lines will need filling and scribing.
The new small square window doesn't need any cutting either. This is simply fitted to the rectangular opening in the port side of the fuselage, where the new square window can be masked off.
A small instruction sheet is included, but decals are not.
This is a good quality yet simple conversion that will customise your Revell Halifax.
