Blackburn Skua 6H, Serial L3055, 800 Sqn. FAA 1940 |
Tamiya's 1/48 scale P-47D Thunderbolt is available online from Squadron.com for only $34.32!
This aircraft belonged to 800 Sqn. FAA and took part in the Norwegian Campaign in May 1940.
It operated from HMS Ark Royal that was patrolling outside Vesteraalen Islands to give support to the allied forces that were trying to recapture Narvik from the Germans. This machine was piloted by Mid. C. Treen with A. E. Goble as air gunner. On the 9th of May 1940 this machine was shot down when it attacked German ground forces in the Narvik area. The crew crash landed behind German lines at Haugfjell close to Narvik but managed to escape to Rombaken fjord where they were rescued by the British destroyer HMS Bedouin.
The model is based on Special Hobby’s Blackburn Skua Mk.II in scale 1:48.
This is a very basic kit but overall it looks right. Most of the cockpit has to be scratch built because of the big canopy resulting in the interior being very visible. The engine is made out of resin and very nice.
There were a lot of problems related to fitting of parts so a lot of dry fitting is required. With a lot of patient the kit builds into a very nice representation of a Skua.
Overall a very enjoyable build. I hope you like the result.
