Introduction

Not much more can be said about the Eduard family of MiG-21’s that hasn’t been said in previous reviews here on Hyperscale and other sties. Eduard’s first release MiG-21MF was covered by Jennings Heilig back in March of 2011 and since then Eduard has continued releasing the many domestic and export variants built by Mikoyan Gurevich.

The Eduard kit is now recognized as the preferred 1/48 kit when building the MiG-21. The kit is very well engineered with remarkable internal and external detail straight from the sprue. The Profipack editions offer additional etch, resin, brassin, paint masks and marking options and in some kits as many as thirteen or more options can be found. However, it’s the additional extras where the difference can be found between the Profipack and Weekend editions. The Weekend edition provides you a single decal/paint scheme option and that’s it. You don’t get any of the extras to be found in the Profipack editions.

The upshot of all this is of course the significant cost saving to the builder. For those of us that are on a tight modeling budget the weekend editions offer great value for money. For the MiG-21PFM you’re looking at a $20 saving over the comparative cost for the Profipack edition the cost.

FirstLook

The kit contains seven sprues in the Eduard medium grey plastic and one sprue of clear plastic for the canopy components. The sprues are identical to those found in the Profipack box. The surface detail is plentiful but very petite as to not detract from the visual interest of the final finish. This will be helpful when finishing the kit in the supplied scheme. A set of decals (sans stencils) are provided for a Polish machine.
