Modelling air force units through their history can be a great way to have a cohesive collection of very different aircraft types covering an extended period of time. Xtradecal has obviously recognised this with their series of RAF squadron histories; the latest of which covers No 12 Sqn from WW1 to the present day.

This set covers the RAF RE.8, Fairey Battle (x5), Vickers Wellington (x2), Avro Lancaster, Avro Vulcan, HS Buccaneer (x2), and Panavia Tornado.

Details of each scheme are as follows:

  • Royal Aircraft Factory RE.8, F6097 Lt Croye Rothes/2nd Lt Hervey Rhodes;

  • Fairey Battles, P2332 PH-F and G, J, K and N, Maastrict Bridge raid 1940;

  • Vickers Wellington Mk.II, W5421 PH-G, lost 5/8/41;

  • Vickers Wellington Mk.III, B1780 PH-W;

  • Avro Lancaster B.III, LM321 PH-H, with nose art;

  • Avro Vulcan B.2, XM602 Coningsby anti-flash white;

  • Hawker-Siddeley Buccaneer S.2B, XX895 1970s;

  • Hawker-Siddeley Buccaneer S.2B, XX885 ex Gulf War, Lossiemouth, overall Medium Sea Grey; and

  •  Panavia Tornado GR.4, A ZA395 in Squadron disbandment scheme 2014.

The decals are supplied in Xtradecal’s usual A5 polythene zip-lock bag. The instructions are nicely produced in colour, and clearly indicate markings placement. A brief note regarding the aircraft and its location is given for each subject.

Unsurprisingly, a list of Xtracolor paints is also provided for the colours required. The decals look to be superbly printed and with excellent colour density.
