Xtradecal continues with their “Yank with Roundels” series by releasing Part 5, covering the Fortress Mk I and Liberator MK.III, VI and VII. Apparently, this sheet was formerly issued as X02172, but has now been improved for reprinting as X72188.

I for one am particularly pleased with this release, as I have long wished to build an Academy B-17C as a Fortress I; now I find myself almost spoiled for choice. The sheet’s other Liberator options are also most interesting, offering something a bit different from the USAAF olive drab over neutral grey and bare metal finishes more often-seen on finished models.

The decals are supplied in Xtradecal’s usual A5 window envelope. The instructions are nicely produced in colour and clearly indicate markings placement. A brief note regarding the aircraft and its station location is given for each subject. The notes also advise where colour speculation is still open to debate, plus mention the use of “mirror finish” on the Fortress I’s (presumably gloss), and how Coastal Command Liberators had matt and gloss-white side and under-surface finishes respectively. Notes on reference sources are also provided. The decals also include propeller logos. Not surprisingly a list of Xtracolor paint codes is also provided for the colours required. The decals look to be superbly printed and with excellent colour density.

The subjects covered are as follows:

  • Fortress I, AN520 / WP-G, No.90 Sqn, RAF Polebrook, July 1941;

  • Fortress I, AN521 / WP-K, No.90 Sqn, RAF Polebrook , October 1941;

  • Fortress I, AN537 / NR-L, Coastal Command Development, RAF Nutts Corner Nth Ireland, August 1942;

  • Liberator Mk.III, LV345 / E, No.86 Sqn, RAF Thorney Island, October 1942;

  • Liberator GR.Mk.VI, KG904 / ZZ-E, No.220 Sqn, Azores, 18 April 1945;

  • Liberator GR.Mk.VII, KG869 / 2V-B, No.547 Sqn, RAF St. Eval, September/October 1944; and

  • Liberator B.Mk.VI, KL372 / EP-C, No.104 Sqn, Foggia Main Italy 1945.
