This is a good summarised information source on JG 53, its operational history, commanders and equipment. It includes some very good photo images and attractive colour scheme illustrations. The 30-page booklet and decal set reviewed here is number seven in Kagero’s “Units” series. It is in landscape format measuring 205 x 275-mm, which is slightly smaller than A4-size. It summarises JG 53’s operations in various theatres throughout WW2 and provides an interesting unit history, plus 40 very good photo images, and 4 colour illustrations. It also provides the names of all JG 53 commanders, details of each of the various sub-units, and a list of aircraft types used during the war.
Full colour scheme illustrations are provided for four versions of Bf 109’s from different periods of JG 53’s history. These are nicely presented in colour profiles (with plan views in only one case), and have paint colours cross-referenced to RLM codes as would be expected. Notes on the individual aircraft are included, and these have some information specific to minor details of the paint finish.
Decals covering individual aircraft markings for these three subjects accompany the booklet; they are supplied in 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32 scales; although no national insignia are included. The aircraft concerned are:
-
Bf 109E-1; “White 12” of 2/JG 53, Rennes airfield, France, 1940.
-
Bf 109F-4/Z/B; W.Nr. 7473, “White 3”, flown by Uffz. Felix Sauer of 10.(Jabo)/JG 53, San Pietro airfield, Sicily, March 1942.
-
Bf 109G4 Trop; W.Nr. 15013, “Black 16”, flown by Lt. Ulrich Seiffert of 8./JG 53, Siacca airfield, Sicily, late April 1943.
-
Bf 109F-2; W.Nr. 5434, “Black 3”, flown by Fw. Josef Wurmheller of 5./JG 53, Krowje-Selo airfield, Russia, mid-July 1941.
The decals are printed by Cartograf and are superbly well rendered as would be expected given this company’s reputation.
