JG 2 Jagdgeschwader “Richthofen” was among the most famous Luftwaffe fighter outfits. The unit drew on the traditions of JG 1, which was commanded during the Great War by legendary fighter ace Manfred Feiherr von Richthofen. The aircrews of JG 2 spent most of World War II in the west as the first line of Germanys defence against the RAF and then latter, USAAF bombers.
This new reference source from Kadero publishing follows the same format as the rest of the so called “Unit series” giving a brief history of the unit’s formation in pre war Germany until its last operational sortie on May 8 1945. The book consists of 43 black and white photos and 4 very well done colour profiles. Each of the profiles has an accompanying decal sheet (in 72nd, 48th and 32nd scales)
The aircraft covered in the profiles are;
Messerschmitt Bf 109 E4 or “White 9” as it has since been known in markings that it appeared in, on the 1st November 1940 when it was forced down at “Mapson's Farm”, Sidlesham, Sussex England and its pilot Oglt Reifferscheitt being taken prisoner. This machine is in the standard grey/green camouflauge of the period with a yellow rudder and a complete yellow coverage of the engine and spinner.
Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-2 or ‘’White 8” flown by Lt Jakob Augustin in early June 1942 on Theville Airfield France. The machine is appears in the standard grey/ green camouflauge of the period with a yellow rudder and engine underside.
Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D9 or “Black 4” in typical late war German camouflauge. This machine has a with a white and yellow identification band together with a black and white spiral spinner. What makes this one interesting is the underside of the wing is partially unpainted, with the front half darkened with one of the camouflage colours.
Messerschmitt Bf 109 F2/B or ‘’ Yellow 3” as it has since been known. This machine is in the standard grey/green camouflauge of the period with a yellow rudder and a complete yellow coverage of the engine and spinner with a thin band of black on the spinner itself.
This is a very well done reference work and is a welcome to the Kagero range of books. I would recommend this book to any modeller with an interest in the JG 2 unit.
Highly recommended.
