HK Models’ 1/32 B-25H and B-25J kits build into impressive models out of the box, but benefit from aftermarket replacement of some parts such as wheels and propellers. Also falling into this category is the canvas cover that protected the twin .50 caliber guns carried in the tail of most late series B-25s. The kit part that represents the cover is poorly shaped and protrudes too far from the rear of the model. While a replacement cover can be scratch-built using tissues soaked in white or cyanoacrylate glue, this resin set from Grey Matter Figures offers a faster and less fiddly solution.
Mastered by Jerry Rutman, the set consists of three parts – two .50 caliber gun barrels and the canvas cover. The cover has been well cast and features subtle creases and folds, as well as location holes for the two barrels. The cover looks to be a drop-fit replacement for the original kit part, although may need a little fettling to sit flush. Three narrow pour stubs will need to be removed, but this will take no more than a couple of minutes.
The gun barrels are also well reproduced with hollow ends and delicate barrel detail, and are almost certainly better than their kit equivalents.
This set is highly recommended to anyone building one of HK Models’ big B-25 kits.
