Zvezda's 1/72 scale Mil Mi 17 Hip is available online from Squadron.com
The rise of the Cold War coincides with the development and widespread use of the helicopter. On either side of the conflict a name epitomizes the design of those new aircraft: Sikorsky and Mil constructions equip the armed forces in East and West from the early 50 onwards.
Mils masterpiece, the Mi-8, was developed into a wide range of variants. The Mi-17 „Hip“ is one of the more important, designed against the background of the Afghan war. That means more powerful engines, chaff/ flare dispenser and arrangements to use heavy armamant such as the 23-mm-canonenpods UPK-23-250, bombs and rockets.
Mil Mi-17 „Hips“ are in widespread use even today, making that construction to one of the most important helicopter designs.
In my opinion Zvezda did a very good job on this kit. Being definitly not over-detailed, the kit parts please the modeler with their excellent fit. I did some scratch building in the cockpit, on the rotor head and the aerial masts. Beside that, the windscreen wiper have been newly built up with copper-wire.
After that build I am eager to get further Russian helis on the workbench- and I will try to get Zvezda kits for sure!
