Review Type:

First Look

Advantages:

Superb production quality and attractive subject choices.

Disadvantages:

Mixing 1/35th vehicle decals with a 1/72nd aircraft decals sheet slightly reduces its value in my view.

Conclusions:

These very well produced decals should appeal to fans of the Irish Air Corps, or those who like something a little different. I feel the sheet would offer better value if the space used for 1/35th vehicle decals were given over to a twelfth 1/72nd aircraft subject. What Max Decals calls a bonus, looks more like an afterthought to me. Despite this gripe, I have found Max Decals to be very good in the past, and happily recommend this set.

This set will obviously appeal to modellers of the Irish Air Corps, and perhaps those who just like to complete their models with slightly unusual and colourful national insignia. I know that the latter was my reason for completing a Fouga Magister several years ago in Irish markings, which happened to be by Max Decals. I can report that they worked very well.

The sheet reviewed here comes in the ubiquitous A5-sized zip-lock bag with folded A4 pages for instructions. These are nicely printed in colour and include quite useful notes describing each scheme, including in many instances main cockpit and cabin colours. The references used in researching the sheet are also listed. The decals appear to be of superb quality.

The selection of schemes covers a range of subjects with kit recommendations in each case. The subjects are as follows:

  • Percival Provost overall silver.
  • Beech King Air 200 (two choices)
  • De Havilland Vampire T55 (two choices).
  • SA330L Puma.
  • SA 342 Gazelle.
  • SIAI Marchetti SF260W Warrior.
  • DHC-1 Chipmunk (two choices).

What is a little unusual is the inclusion of 1/35-scale decals for a selection of Irish Army AFV’s and soft-skinned vehicles, these being:

  • Rolls Royce 1920 Pattern Armoured Car (four choices).
  • DUKW.
  • Churchill Mk VI (two choices).
  • Scorpion (three choices).
  • Ford Truck 1939 & 1940 pattern.

Described as bonus markings, they seem to have been offered as there was unused space on the decal sheet. Personally, I would rather Max Decals had offered one more 1/72-scale aircraft option, as this would make for a more cohesive and complete offering. Mixing genre and scales within one decal sheet slightly reduces its appeal in my opinion. A twelfth aircraft choice rather than the vehicle markings would enhance its value.

Recommended.

Thanks to Max Decals for these samples.
