First Look

Advantages:

Excellent colours with perfect registration; full width bolts; subtle representation of pattern overlap; decal adherences well to surfaces and will react to compound curves with the careful application of decal solution.

Disadvantages:

Conclusion:

A new range of both 4 and 5-colour “lozenge” decals that come in both singular and connected bolts. “Cookie-cut” versions are also available and the present releases cater for the sublime Wingnut Wings Fokker D.VII. The colours are excellent and a sample test revealed no problems with adherence or conformity to the top of a 1:32 scale wing. Highly Recommended.

German “lozenge” fabric has been a much debated topic and many decal manufacturers have had a go at it. Now it’s the turn of Aviattic and they have released their interpretation of the 4 and 5-colour patterns.

They have spent a lot of time researching these sheets, and it shows. The colours look good, and represent a scale “off the production line” appearance. The printing makes it appear as though a subtle fabric weave has been incorporated into the design, which looks very effective in this scale. It’s all done on LaserJet waterslide decal paper, with each sheet exhibiting a matt finish.

The images are quite translucent which means that the underlying paint colour will affect the overall “look” of the “lozenge”. Of course this can work to your advantage if you are an exponent of pre-shading.

All sheets are A4 in size with crisp, clear printing and excellent colour registration. Note that there’s a deliberate overlapping of the colours, just like on the original fabric. This results in a convincing darkening of the pattern’s outline.

Two of these sheets are designed specifically for the Wingnut Wings Fokker D.VII. Each item is “cookie-cut” to match the kit’s parts precisely. The “lozenge” is of the 4-colour variety and includes both upper and lower surfaces.

Each release caters for a different style of rib tape. One has the 4-colour upper lozenge as part of the design, the other sheet using pink. This greatly eases application and alignment.

For those that want to decal other subjects, the material is also available as bolts. These measure the full width of fabric, as used up to the selvedge when seen on some fuselage sides. If using these for the flying surfaces, trim between 0.75 – 1.0 mm off the edges to allow for the area being folded and sewn.

The sheets that show the bolts joined side-by-side have taken care of this task for you. They represent trimmed and joined material as seen on the flying surfaces, and also take care of the pattern orientation.

In these cases, rib tapes will need to be added separately. If you do require “lozenge” coloured tapes, it is recommended not to cut them from these sheets. That’s due to the translucent nature of the product so they will need to be sourced elsewhere.

Conclusion

This is the start of what looks to be a fascinating new range of decals. Over 100 sheets are planned so there is plenty to look forward to. As well as 1:32, other releases are scheduled to include 1:24, 1:28, 1:48, 1:72, and even 1:144 scale.

Some will be factory fresh, some will be weathered, so there’ll be plenty to choose from.
If you want something different from the kit supplied decals, then these sheets from Aviattic are just the thing.

Thanks to Wingnut Wings for the sample
