Allied Wings s a series of books produced by Phil Listemann and printed in France.
The series basically provides a thumbnail illustration of specific aircraft types that were manufactured in either Britain or the United States and operated by the Royal Air Force and other air forces allied to them.
To date, there are 16 titles in the series:
- AW 01: Supermarine Spitfire XII
- AW02: Martin Marauder Mk.I
- AW04: Westland Whirlwind Mk.I
- AW05: Douglas Dauntless in RNZAF service
- AW07: Boeing Fortress Mk.I
- AW08: Boulton Paul Defiant - Pt.1
- AW09: North American B-25 Mitchell in RAAF service
- AW11: Curtiss F11C/BFC & BF2C
- AW12: Curtiss SB2C Helldiver in French service
- AW14: Douglas Skyraider in French service
- AW16: Short Singapore Mk.III
Allied Wings Number 16 details the Short Singapore Mk III (Short designation of S.19) which was manufactured by Short Brothers Plc of Belfast in the United Kingdom. It was a general reconnaissance biplane flying boat with a crew of eight powered by four six cylinder Rolls Royce Kestrel engines.
Its first flight was in 1926 and its service was predominately pre World War Two entering operational service with 210 Squadron Royal Air Force in 1934.
34 of the machines were produced in all and they served in several of Royal Air Force squadrons as well as 5 Squadron Royal New Zealand Air Force.
Layout is as follows:
- Deliveries and Strength Short S.19 Singapore Mk.III
- Technical Data Short S.19 Singapore Mk.III
- The Register – this section details the history and fate of each airframe.
The book is softbound, comprises 34 pages, and is 210mm x 297 mm in size with 57 black and white images of varying quality. It also features 12 colour profiles spread over four pages. These profiles show it wearing a variety of different schemes.
As with all of the Allied Wings books I have seen to date, this one too provides just a précis of the Singapore III but it does tell you the story of the machine succinctly and provides you with information on its usage as well as the colour schemes worn by it.
