FirstRead

For modellers of WWI aircraft, Wingnut Wings has been the flavour of the month for quite a while now.

Many construction articles have appeared on the internet as well as in a variety of magazines. What if a selection of these were collated and published together in a single handy reference book. One enterprising publishing house has done just that.

Between the soft card covers are 112 pages. These are divided into chapters on individual builds as well as a handy hints and techniques section. The former contains a good mixture of aircraft which cover both German and British subjects. By having a number of different contributors, a wide range of building styles and methods are available for the reader to study.

A publication such as this relies heavily on its photographic content. Fortunately the images presented here are printed to a very high standard thus allowing maximum inspiration from each subject.

The book starts with a perennial favourite, the Hansa Brandenburg W29. This is followed by the SE.5 (sic), Roland D.VIa, RE.8, Albatros D.Va, Sopwith Pup, and the biggest of all…the Gotha G.IV.

Each of the authors approaches their topic in a different way which leads to a diverse range of finishes. The models are all competently built with varying degrees of extra detailing being incorporated, so there’s plenty to absorb from these pages.

The hints and tips section looks at two areas that can be quite daunting to replicate on aircraft of this era. One of these is the trickly art of rigging and the other is simulating wooden surfaces.

A number of techniques are demonstrated in clear step-by-step photographs so that the builder can decide what method suits them best.

Conclusion

After purchasing your Wingnut Wings kit, you may be wondering how other modellers approach their build.

Well…this book gives you a number of ideas and also presents quite a range of finishing styles to choose from. It’s also an excellent source for motivation and it’s pleasing to know that more volumes are in the pipeline.
