Eduard's 1/48 scale MiG-23 Exhaust Nozzle and Wheel Bay
are available online from Squadron.com
The exhaust and afterburner sections of modern jets are complicated affairs and the MiG-23M/MF Tumansky R-29 (R-29A) engine is no exception, an area which Eduard and other resin manufacturers have tackled in an effort to improve the level of detail over the kit supplied plastic. The resin casting is excellent as per the high standard that we have come to expect from Eduard with the casting block attachments being well thought out, with cut-outs in the resin to assist with their removal.
It appears that this Brassin set depicts the exhaust nozzle in the open position; it would be nice if this was mentioned in the instructions, as Eduard currently do not provide an option for closed exhaust nozzles.
This set is a vast improvement over the minimal and very soft detail provided by Trumpeter in their MiG-23 main wheel bay. The landing gear doors have also received a makeover with detailed resin replacements providing a nice touch. Eduard also provides drawings to assist with the alignment of the undercarriage; having built an ESCI MiG23, this alignment was one of the more difficult aspects of the build. Of a minor note, the instructions are missing the inclusion of R17 into R13 (wheel bay), you would however eventually work it out.
A few online quick builds highlight the minimal detail with the kit main wheel bay, which makes this Eduard set a definite must for your MiG-23.
Both sets are highly recommended, if you are looking at the Main Wheel Bay set then you should also look at the Brassin MiG-23 Wheels to complete your undercarriage upgrade.
Highly recommended.
Thanks to Eduard for the samples.
